Dudhsagar Falls Goa: A Majestic Natural Wonder
Dudhsagar Falls, located on the Tambdi Surla in the Indian state of Goa, stands as a captivating four-tiered waterfall. Situated 60 km from Panaji by road and positioned on the Madgaon-Belagavi rail route, approximately 46 km east of Madgaon and 80 km south of Belagavi.
Nestled in the far southeastern corner of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, Dudhsagar Falls is Goa’s second-highest waterfall at 603m, surpassed only by Jog Falls. The best time to experience the falls is shortly after the monsoon season, typically in October when the water levels are at their peak, and the cascades earn their misty nomenclature – Dudhsagar, meaning ‘Sea of Milk’ in Konkani.
Accessing the falls begins with a journey to the village of Colem, around 7km south of Molem, reachable by car or the scenic 8.15 am local train from Margao, offering excellent views as it crosses over the falls. Return train times vary seasonally. From Colem, a shared jeep (₹500 per person for six people) takes you on a bumpy 45-minute journey, followed by a quick climb over rocks to reach the falls.
While the jeep navigates through the sanctuary, passing scenic jungle and forest areas, you’ll cross three streams, including Devil’s Canyon, a beautiful gorge with a river running between steep-sided rocks. Swimming is possible at the falls (life jackets provided for ₹50), and walking to the head of the falls offers breathtaking views (guided trekking is recommended).
Goa Tourism offers the ‘Dudhsagar Special’ day trip (₹1200), departing from Calangute, Mapusa, Panaji, or Miramar on Wednesdays and Sundays. The tour includes stops at Old Goa, Ponda, lunch at Molem, and a visit to Shri Mahadeva Temple at Tambdi Surla, departing at 9 am and returning at 6 pm. Private travel agents also provide tours.
For adventure seekers, it’s possible to trek the 11km from Colem to the falls in around four hours, but it’s advisable to organize a local guide in advance and start early.
